The next step in our renovation is to replace the full length running boards. We want to do this before the roof repairs as it will give us something to stand on whilst replacing the roof. HubsThese were removed when the boggies were replaced some years ago; as the replacement wheels were somewhat wider than the old ones.

We will replace this board as closely as possible to the original specifications - although it will be necessary to carve into the boards to permit freedom for replacement wheels.

Boards

From the original diagram it can be seen that the length over headstocks was originally 7315mm (24' 0"). Today's measurements agree, although at first we thought this had changed - there was some mis-understanding over how the headstocks should be measured.

We now need to obtain two running boards 7315mm x 190mm x 15mm - getting  them to the yard in one piece is pretty much impossible. So although it is preferably not to have a join in the boards, we will have to laminate the length from smaller boards in some way.

By far the best way of doing this would be using what is commonly known as a set of "rabbit" joins.

Rabbit join

Two pieces of wood are cut into, overlapped and joined as illustrated above.
